What are some troubleshooting tips on fixing a slow computer?

The Internet seems especially slow sometimes, like when you type in a field it processes each letter (sometimes). I have road runner high speed and a 512mb memory, 80gb drive etc. Could it be the over 1,000 songs or the amount of programs?
